Hi,

My "check engine" light came on the other day, so I took it to a mechanic that I know. He tested it using the computer and found that there was a problem with the catalytic converter. I had noticed before going to the mechanic that my mileage for driving was not as good as it used to be and that there was more exhaust coming out of my car than normal. He stated that the catalytic converter might need to be replaced. My question is whether or not the problem could be anything else. Should I have him check something else? Is it usual for the catalytic converter to need replacing? I have a Toyota Camry 2002 (4- cylinder) with 92,000 miles on it. Thank you for your help.
