Noise in steering when turning. Dealer says replace left front strut. Shouldn't both front be replaced, even with 21,000 miles on the car?

Hi jxr0bps,

Thank you for the donation.

From the manufacturer's warranty point of view, if there are any faults, that affected part would be replaced. That is the reason only one side is replaced.

Replacing both struts at the same time is the normal practice but then again it is rather subjective. Strut would not wear evenly due to driving and road conditions and in the long run, one is going to wear off faster that the other.

Struts are made to last a certain number of osillations and with 21 k miles, my estimate would be a 10 % used life. I would not worry about it as even new struts might not be 100 % similar for both sides.
