I have been told that I need to replace my water pump now before it gets bad and leaks all over the cables and they are quoting a price of $500. Is this a fair price and is this a common repair?

That's more than fair. the water pump is driven by the timing belt and the belt has to be removed to access the water pump. Make sure you are changing the timing belt with it.
