2000 Toyota Camry code PO773 Shift Solonoid E-electrical

I have just had a new engine and a bunch of work on my car due to Midas sending car out with oil light on after changing oil;apparently sludge got into engine and it seized. Now,one day after getting it back,engine light comes on with code PO773. I have it at a transmission place. They quote $777.00 to remove trans. and "find problem. Question: Cant this code be fixed without the whole removal of transmission? Am I being taken yet again?

The P0773 code has been set for a failure of shift lock up solenoid circuit in your transmission. This solenoid is located in the transmission behind the pan. According to the diagnostic procedures listed for testing for this code in the Mitchell 1 manual the transmission should not have to be removed. Possible causes for this code is as follows:

Open or short to the shift lock solenoid
Shift lock soldenoid malfunction
ECM malfunction

These can all be tested without removing the transmission. Also if you just had the motor replaced you may want to consider contacting the person who did the work as this could be something as simple as a wire that was pinched during reassembly. Also don't rule out going to the dealer as they may be better equipped and more knowledgable about proper diagnosis for this code. Sometimes the dealer can be cheaper just because they work on these models all the time. Because of this the techs tend to be more knowledgable about testing procedures rather than just jumping in and tearing the trans out to "see what they find".
