1999 Toyota Camry brake pads rubbing against rotor

Brakes problem
1999 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Brake problem. We had the front brake pads replaced on our 99 Toyota Camry and about a week after that the front driver wheel would start shaking when driving on the highway and a strong burn smell was noticed.

After getting the car home I noticed smoke coming from inside the front driver tire rim and strong metallic burn smell. Also noticed without applying the brakes the car would slow down as if the brakes were being applied. Even got to the point I had to give it a little gas to keep going. It was like applying the gas and brake pedal at the same time (did this because I was literally 1/2 block from my house). I was told the caliper was bad so I replaced it, but the symptoms are still the same.

Any suggestions as to what's causing the problem.

Check the brake hose if its collasped internally acting as a one way check valve been here before

Thanks for the suggestion. I have ordered a brake hose from Advanced Auto Parts and will put it on hopefully tomorrow. I will definitely report back and let you and others know if that was the problem.

I put a new brake hose on front driver side, bled the front brakes, but the problem still exist. After doing city driving for about 15-20 minutes, the car still feels like the brakes are being applied. Eventually the more I drive, the more brake resistance there. Are there any other things you can think of?

If it has an ABS unit get it checked out

No there is no ABS. If there is nothing else to recommend then I will just take it into a brake shop. I do thank you for the advice you have given.

Its seems like something is blocking the return of the fluid back to the master cylinder-inspect/test the M/C also the rear brakes

I took the car to Meineke who diagnosed the problem as there being power steering fluid mixed in with brake fluid. They had to replace just about the whole brake system, rotors, shoes, master cylinder, etc and bleed the brake lines. Total damage was $1,060.

Thinking back the problem was noticed about a week after we had the front brakes replaced by my mechanic. As much as I would like to go back and accuse my mechanic of this problem since he was the only one who could of made that mistake of topping off the brake fluid with power steering fluid, it will be his word against mine.
