I changed the timing belt and the engine belt at 70,000 miles and its due again now (Toyota recomments to change it after 60,000 miles for 1998 Camry).

About 10 days ago, I heard sceeching nose when I started the car but it went away when the car picked up speed. The noise was heard when the speed was reduced for stopping the car. The noise has reduced and has become somewhat intermittent now. I am not sure if there is something wrong with steering wheel belt or some other belt. I must admit that I did wash the car with a hose just a day before the trouble begain.

I would go with the hose got it wet. Just be sure to dry it off next time. Also, make sure that is no damage to either belts.
