The engine light came on. I used a code key reader and found p0446 and p0446(pd) error codes. I checked the hose coming out of the back of the air box and it seemed contected and in good shape. I replaced the gas cap about a year ago with one from the toyota dealer. When I opened the gas cap there was a release of pressure that lasted about 5 seconds. Are there other trouble shooting procedures I can try next to narrow down this problem?

The EVAP system consists of purge and vent solenoids.

You would need a high end scanner to test each solenoid in the system. These scanners are expensive and only dealers or trusted garage have them.

Its sounds like I cannot do anything to trouble shoot this myself. Do I have to go to a dealer for this or should a qualified shop be able to do this? Any idea of the cost ?

VSV at the fuel tank on the rear axle cross member are very common on these. Any shop worth their salt can diagnose this. Trouble shooting 50-100?

While in many cases this is a simple fix (gas cap), you have already replaced it.

As SW said the vacuum switching valve is one area, a shop with a good scanner can test each solenoid/valve and isolate the problem.

This is much more cost effective than changing these and hope you hit the right one.
