i recently purchased a 98 toyota avalon the engine was replaced and the car hasnt moved since what it does when its cold u can feel the trans engage but doesnt drive to good like a weak engagement and 2-3 min later it starts to warm up an u get nothin no feel of engagement nothin my question is where do i start diagnosis or do i just go replace or rebuild trans

Could be the vehicle speed sensor,throttle position, and shift position sensor on the neutral safety switch.

Check the above before you go to the shifting solenoids/torque converter lock-up.
