1999 Toyota Avalon Overfilled Oil Crank Case

MY dealer overfilled my car with oil during an oil and filter change today. I drove car home 15 miles and noticed significant smoke at times on freeway. Also heard suspicious sounds and thought car performance had changed. Checked oil level when got home and found it 2 iniches above full. Waited 30 minutes for oil to drip down in crank case and rechecked. Still 2 inches over full. Cranked car to move it into garage and had significant smoke. Oil does not appear to be extremely clean either. I am suspecting that they did not drain the crank case or perhaps did not change the filter.

What action should I take.

Drain the oil out of the crankcase in a bucket and bring it to them to make a point that they overfilled it-look at the oil filter if its new.

You should have a total 5 qts of oil in the crankcase with an oil filter change. Go get them

Thanks for the reply. I will find out how much over full my crank case is. What I want to know is what type of damage could the overfill cause in terms of seals, gaskets, etc. Will draining the oil and re filling properly correct the performance problem I noticed. Will this potentially cause my car to start burning oil which it never has. I think the dealership will be receptive to addressing my problems and concerns but I don't know what I should be concerned about. This is not just a small overfill. The dip stick shows oil 2 inches above the full mark. It makes me sick to see smoke coming out of my tail pipe. Although the car is 10 years old it only has 77K on it and has been maintained like a baby.

If there's no knocking noises-go ahead and drain it-refill to the dipstick full mark. The smoking is probably due to the rings are unable to scrap off the excessive oil due to the crankshaft splashing it all over.

Overfilling can create lubrication problems and leaks.
