i recently has all 4 struts replaced, as they were the original, the mechanic told me that the lower front control arm bushings were bad, he said you need to replace the whole control arm and cannot replace just the bushings, is that correct? everytime I go over bumps i can hear a knocking noise in the front end.

Yes you can. If the dealer does not have it, you can buy the aftermarket Moog brand K90041 (Amazon.com $37.73) and bring to the machine shop to press it out OR you can buy the whole arm with bushing (made in china) for less than $100

By the way, I have that front knocking sound before on bumps or rough roads. It is the upper rubber mount of the strut. Did you change this too when you replaced the struts.
