radio antenna will not retract

2000 toyota 4runner, when ever the engine is turned on the antenna make a grinding sound. It is fully extended, but will not retract.

It has probably got a broken mast assembly. There is a toothed piece of plastic that goes down into the motor, if the antennae is bent and cant move freely, it usually breaks the mast assembly.
