Oil pan drain plug loose

My granddaughter, who lives 90 miles away, called me for help on her 98 Camry V-6 with 102,000 miles. While getting an oil change at a quick lube place they told her that the previous changers had stripped the threads in the pan. They claimed when they tighten the plug that it would keep turning at the end of its play and it was the thread in the pan and not the plug. Nevertheless they said it was not leaking and sent her home with instructions to get it fixed as soon as possible. They said it had no gasket.
Can the pan be retreated and an oversize plug be used? Does this car suppose to have a gasket with the plug? Could they be wrong and the plug be stripped next to the fitting?
Any light you can shed and advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
