my oil pump switch on my 2001 4 runner limited with 95k miles malfunctioned, and drained all of the oil out of my engine. my car stalled. oil replced, switch for oil pump replaced, but it still wouldn't start. mechanic opened up the engine and said i blew the cam. does this sound right and if so what should i expect the cost to be and is it worth repairing?

Friction on an un oiled engine can and will destroy metal parts! Yes it not only possible, but you may find lower end damage too! Don't know how much the truck is worth to you, but usually a rebuild job never goes as planned!

Open up the upper timing belt cover and have someone crank engine over while you look at the 2 camsprockets whether they're turning and making noise.

Belt intact, cams are turning, and no noise do below and see what happens could be fuel or spark problem preventing it from starting.

Do this 1st disconnect a sparkplug wire and ground it to the engine while cranking it over do you have spark? And also check the injectors whether they are clicking while cranking it over. Do you have both?

BTW does the engine turn over when starter is engaged if not could be locked-up caused by the excessive friction-parts welded together.
