I have a Toyota 1998 4 runner, mileage about 120k, 3400 engine.

When I start the motor, the starter stays engaged. In fact, when I turn-off the ignition and remove the key, the starter still continues to operate. I had to take of a battery terminal to make it stop.

Also, within the last two weeks, occasionally I would have problems engaging the starter, especially during cold weather. After several attempts, I was able to get the starter engaged and start the motor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Check the ignition switch and starter relay its between this two that's causing the problem.

My 4runner 2000 3.4L manuel 137k ml has similar symptom recently. A few days ago it won't start at hot weather, but finally started before I jump it. Then yesterday after driving 50 miles and parked for 20 minutes and start again, the engine runs with a very high pitch noise. I turned off the key but engine still runs without stop. I turned on/off a few times and moved the SUV out for a few feet and finally the engine turned off at a key off transition. After I started it again, everything looks normal. Today, it sounds fine but with a little noisy under the hood.

Is this the same issue from starter relay up to ignition switch?
Should I still drive it for 60 miles for a good mechanic shop I knew well?
