Replaced fuel tank due to rust and leaking fuel. Mileage went up to 21mpg. While under vehicle I noticed fuel oxygen sensor was bent and wires were broken. Replaced sensor and mileage went to 14mpg and timing is off. Disconnected sensor and check engine light is on but mileage is back up to 21mpg car runs fine. Where do I go from here? Will this damage the catalytic converter leaving the sensor unplugged?

It will cause the engine to run rich at all times also ruin the catalytic converter.
