Top Idler Pulley Removal?

Hello,

So, I have a somewhat complex issue. I am changing the top idler pulley, the top bolt that holds the bracket is almost rounded off from a previous repair (former owner)
Because there is no space to slip a 6-sided socket over this bolt, is it possible to raise the engine from underneath using a jack? I don't have access to a hoist.
I don't see how this bolt would come all the way out even if I did break it loose due to no room to remove it.
The manual doesn't go over this at all, so any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

As far as lifting the engine, you could get an inch or so, but it isn't going to be much at all. Plus, you will need to loosen the engine mounts.

I attached two pics. Which bolt are you having trouble with? You shouldn't have to lift the engine.

So, I'm actually not talking about the adjustment bolts for the pulleys, I'm talking about the BRACKET that holds the top pulley on. There is only about 1" of space between the pulley and the engine compartment, so yes, to get that bolt out the engine needs to be lifted to clear the engine compartment. That top bolt that holds the bracket on is at least 3".

Hi,

Do you ever wonder why they design things like this? Anything to make a simple job nearly impossible.

As far as lifting, place a floor jack under the vehicle. On top of the floor jack, place something like a 2x6 between the jack and the engine oil pan. That will help distribute the weight and prevent damaging the oil pan. Without disconnecting mounts, you may get an inch out of it. If you still can't get it, you will have to disconnect the mounts.

When you do this, make sure not to apply too much pressure on the oil pan. Also, pay attention to any wiring, hoses, or anything that can bind and be damaged.

Make sure the engine is secure on the jack before lifting. I attached a pic below showing mount locations. Again, if possible, only loosen the bolts on the mounts.
