Timing marks

My polo highline 1.2 tsi doesn't have timing marks

You should have two timing marks on the two bottom pulley pictured below. The way to do this is you need to turn the motor over until these dots are lined up and then you must lock the cams down so that they do not move when you have the chain off. I added a picture of this with the lock in the intake cam but not the exhaust but you need one in both to ensure neither cam moves.

If they move then you will need to set them up separately with the chain off. So you will need to set number 1 cylinder to the compression stroke and then align the cams so that both valves are closed on number 1, then lock them down and install the chain.

We do not have a manual on this vehicle so I cannot provide specifics from the manual but hopefully this helps.
