Timing chain tension-er guides are being replaced at the Ford dealer. No local mechanic would touch it due to the job being a pain. Ford called and asked if I wanted to replace something in the cam shaft? "Just in case" while they are in there. Why would they ask that? oh, and charge an extra $650.00 for the parts not labor.

Good morning.

I need to know exactly what they are asking to replace. the guides are common failures. it may be the tension-er they are talking about.

Well, it is at the dealer for replacing of the timing chain tension-er guides. They then called about replacing the cam shaft sensors "while they are in there" ? That is not what it was going in for, to me, if it is not broke do not fix it. But it is a dealership, they said $658.00 then called back an hour later and said how about $450.00! Huh? I already have a quote for the timing chain tension-er guides to be fixed for $1,900.00! Is the cam shaft sensors something I 100% need replaced "while they are in there" ?

No, you do not need to do them if thy are not bad or determined to be bad.

they are trying to be proactive as they are right there for the sensors. considering the age of the vehicle, they are trying to prevent a future repair.

They are only about $22.00 a piece.

Roy, I got my truck back, it has been about twenty four hours. Ticking/knocking is still there, they said the camshaft visors? looked good just worn? And now my truck has a wicked hard time turning over to start and my remote starter does not allow a start either. Help! what should I do and say because I clearly need to call them back, and I am about to lose it!

Okay, they mean phaser's for the cam gear. they should have done them when they were in there.

The noise is most likely a lifter making noise. Did it make this noise prior to the repair?

Yes it did make that noise prior thsts why I brought it to my mechanic . Who said it needed the timing chain tension-er guides. They did offer to do the camshaft phasers while they were in there "just in case" but then said they looked okay no need. So tension-er guides and oil/filter were done. Noise is still there and now my truck barely starts? Any advice on that?

It sounds like they missed or messed something up. Take it back to see what they say. You might need to visits a different shop to get a second opinion. Can you make a video of the noise and upload it here so we can hear what the noise is? That way we can tell exactly what is going on.

Cheers, Ken

They definitely messed something up, I refuse to go back. I did however end up getting a great deal on trading it in. So no worries for now it is gone!! And no it did not go to that Ford dealer!
