Timing belt

Hello,

I am confused and seeing conflicting answers online. AI isn't helpful either. I have a 2014 Chevy Cruze 1.8L engine. The timing belt went. It doesn't even try to start. Just clicking sound almost like the battery is dead. Is it a non-interference engine? What is the likelihood it can be fixed without damage to the engine?

The 1.8 in your car is an interference engine so it is very likely going to have valve damage from the failed belt. Can it be repaired, sure, the question just becomes what is actually damaged. For instance if it is the valves then a replacement cylinder head and related items should repair it. Even something like a hole in a piston or bent connecting rod is repairable. The only way to know for sure is to take it apart and investigate.

It is an interference engine. Your most economical option as far as repairing it, would be a new/used engine. If you do decide to go this route, I would HIGHLY recommend you go ahead and service the timing belt before installation ahead of time if you get a used one.

As the other mechanic states above, the only way to know the extent of the damage now is to tear it apart and inspect it.
