When should I replace the timing belt?

You don't want to find out that it is time that you have to change it because that is by it breaking. So it is important to have it changed at its proper interval which is 90,000 miles. If you are at 133,000 miles and have not changed it then we need to get that done ASAP.

I'm looking at a 2003 edition of a timing belt replacement manual... The OEM (Toyota) has 'not' recommended a timing belt replacement interval for this engine. Typical trade practice indicates that, as a precaution, the timing belt should be replaced at 60,000 mile intervals. "Caution": This engine has been identified as an 'Interference' engine in which the possibility of valve-to-piston damage in the event of a timing belt failure is 'most likely' to occur. (direct from the manual)

Replacement book time is about 3 hours and as a standard practice, replace the water pump at the same time, which will raise repair time some. And a wise practice, replace belt tensioner and guide pully too.

I recommend that you do not put off belt replacement.

Hey Davis, Glenn again..

3 hours shop time labor for a timing belt is actually quite low for most engines in the realm of manufacturers (some are at 10+ hours + shop charge on parts) and it's likely parts will cost you more than time. For example; mine is 5 hours to do, but the water pump is a ridiculous $325.00! I've looked in every avenue, but no luck on a cheaper pump, so even doing it myself it's a $600.00 out of pocket job with all parts considered. Hope you have better luck on parts...

Keep us informed on the outcome of your endeavor... You have definitely gotten great life from the original belt, but please do not push it much farther. As typical life goes it will fail when you need need it the most!! (and potential engine damage could be economically devastating)
