Use an inductive-pickup timing light and watch the vibration damper, with or without timing marks. Raise engine speed, and you should see the damper appear to rotate a little. This pertains to distributors with the vacuum advance unit bolted to the side of it. On newer engines the mechanical and vacuum advance are done electronically in the Engine Computer.
