timing chain was not aligned correctly

After installing the timing chain, I turned the engine clockwise wise manually. It turned to some point and then the tension collapsed. The timing chain became loose. Is the tensioner bad or is it a sign that the timing chain wasn't aligned correctly?

Hello,

The 2004 Sorento is equipped with a timing belt.

Any time there is a tension issue you first want to make sure that the belt is aligned properly. If it is and you still have no tension, then it is a good chance that the tensioner is faulty.

Hi,

I agree with Sean. However, keep in mind this is an interference engine. If timing is off, there isn't enough clearance between the tops of the pistons and the valves. They will hit and cause damage. If it stopped, don't force it to turn. Follow the directions Sean provided and then turn it by hand to confirm there are no issues. Do this with the spark plugs removed so it is easier to recognize if something is binding.
