temperature gauge not working properly

Hi,

Is the heater working properly? I ask because there could be air in the system causing an issue with flow. If it is, then chances are that isn't the problem.

Next, if the gauge reads normal at idle and when you are driving it drops, most likely it is a connection issue. Have you checked the coolant temp sensor wiring to make sure it isn't loose or was damaged when the work was done?

Sounds like you have an air pocket in the cooling system. There is a chance that you have a faulty sensor but I based on the recent repair, it is pretty common to get air pockets that will cause odd functionality on the temp sensor.

I would suggest two things. First fill the cooling system with the funnel attached. It helps reduce the chance of air pockets. Then second, lift the corner closest to the cooling fill cap and install the funnel with a 1/3 full of coolant and then run the engine so that it gets hot. This will work out most air pockets because the air will work towards the high point.
