2002 Suzuki XL7 over heating

i was driving and my car when it idled up real high; then the gauges showed that it was running hot, and the engine service light came one (light red). Has had a coolant smell coming off the motor for about 2 weeks, and it shut off while i was driving. There was a grinding sounds coming form it while i was driving after it ran hot; also, the resivour was empty when i pulled over when i noticed it was registering hot.
