General Description
Most universal joints require no maintenance. They are lubricated for life and can not be lubricated on the vehicle. If a universal joint becomes noisy or worn, it must be replaced. The propeller shaft is a balanced unit. Handle it carefully so that balance can be maintained.
Once they start making noise they do need to be replaced. They can actually come apart and fall under the vehicle. It is best to get it fixed as soon as you can. Check around – especially at truck repair facilities. We have one here that has a drive shaft shop right next to it. My estimates show about $60.00 for parts, with labor about $140.00, give or take a little. If it comes apart on you, it will cost you a whole lot more than that.
You can also check estimates with transmissions shops and general repair shops.
As for being under warranty: you would have to check the dealership and maybe if it is and you are so far away, they can set up something with someone local. If you have the same type of dealership where you are, they too, if under warranty may be able to transfer the warranty. I don’t think it will be though. But again, you don’t have to have this accomplished at the dealer.
