loss of power

I have a 94 suzuki sidekick jx w/ 1.6 liter, 16 valve, MFI engine. It is 4-door, 4WD and has 125,000 miles on it. Recently it has started idling rough and has lost considerable power although it does still run. I have reset the timing properly and checked for any leaks, none, all the fluids seem fine.I replaced the plugs and ignition wires,the fuel is fresh,distributor cap and rotor seem o.k. I'm thinking it might be some sort of choke or vacuum problem because of the way it sounds and idles and also while it was idling I pulled off there is like an air resevoir type bottle that is on the air inflow line between the air filter and the injectors and that shut the engine down immediately. I would really appreciate some help. I enjoy this car.

way it sounds? Is the engine louder than it used to be? Loosen the exhaust before the cat converter and drive it, it will be noisy but if the cat is partially plugged then it will have its power back. Does the engine idle smooth, or like it is missing a cylinder?

I have the 94 suzuki sidekick that recently has lost power. You suggested that I disconect the exhaust before the cat convertor so I did that and ran it and that isn't the problem.You also ask if it runs louder now then it did and if it it idles like it is missing a cylinder and the answer to both questions is yes.If you have any other ideas I would appreciate your suggestions.

OK here are my guesses on your problem

First off I would change the fuel filter - do the cheap stuff first.

Check EGR valve - cheap to check, will cause terrible idle or stalling if stuck but not likely cause poor performance while moving down the road.

Is check engine light on? air flow sensor or throttle position sensor problems could cause bad performance.

Since you checked/changed plugs wires etc Im guessing its not a spark plug that backed out but I had that happen and it caused my sidekick to run like @*&$ but you could hear the compression leak.

OK now the bad news, have you ever changed the timing belt? If timing belt slipped a tooth on its gear it would cause bad idle and performance.
