Sometimes the engine idles at 3-4 thousand rpm, other times it barely idles. Fuel is not being used efficiently. it is totally unpredictable.

replace the air filter and check for vacuum leaks !

what car?
i can almost guess. 4wd, Sidekick USA or Vitara?
93s come with 8v TBI or 16valve MPI fuel injection.
which one you have?
this old car( just sold a 91 i restored to like new running wise)
lots of things can cause that.
I could list off all 100 of them ,but no.
is check engine lamp on running? #1 top thing.
top fails.
1; horrible need for a tune up. wires cap sparks and filters
2: EGR stuck wide open (main valve)
3: CRACKED exhaust manifold.
4: bad o2 sensor.
5: TPS bad or not calibrated (tps switch must close on this car or car will NEVER idle right)
6: gummed up ISC valve.
7:ECU capacitors in side bad,"Rubycon" desease.
i could give more and some tests but you didnt give car spec.
