The coil on my car cracked and was arcing to ground from the boot and I replaced it with a new NAPA unit. I'm still getting the same "ticking" sound however that I got with the bad one. It does work however. I also changed the coil wire, which may have been a bad decision. Unfortunately, I left the original at the auto parts store and it's gone.
I was getting 50% of the normal gas mileage after that and it was running very rough. I just found a bad vacuum plug that was dry rotted and I replaced it. About 80% of the power has come back, but it's still running a little rough.
The puzzler is that when I hold a screwdriver that is NOT grounded to anything on one of the mounting screws of the distributor cap, I can see a little "arcing" of electricity. The distributor has a grounding wire that seems secure. Possible bad ground? Bad distributor? Could that have caused the coil to crack and arc?
