Transmission problem

My Suzuki Sidekick seems to have this pattern of getting really hard to shift, then getting to a point where you can't shift it at all. It's not grinding the gears, it's just like you are hitting a wall and it just won't go into gear. When you turn the car off, you can shift it very easily, it's just when it is on. This problem doesn't happen all the time though, sometimes it shifts smoothly, sometimes rough, and sometimes not at all....any ideas?
