1995 Suzuki Esteem Fuel gauge

When the gauge shows empty, does the low fuel warning light come on?

Previously was the gauge showing differently?

From the symptoms, I would suspect the fuel sending unit in fuel tank rather than the gauge itself.

Due to technical problems I am having slow browsing speed, ISP fault, I am not able to access our database and is unable to provide you the testing specifications for the sending unit.

Hopefully when the problem clears later I can get them and post it for you.

Thanks for the follow-up.

When the gauge shows empty the fuel light does NOT come on. I question even if the car has a low fuel light because I've never seen it.

I've owned the car for 2 years and the gauge has always been acting like this...I just never had the time to try to figure out what's going on.

Please let me know about the fuel sending unit and how to check/replace it. Hopefully it doesn't require removal or replacement of the fuel tank.

The sending unit is located in fuel tank and removal installation takes 2 hours. Fuel tank would have to be dropped to get at it. If low fuel warning lamp is equipped, you would notice a bulb type unit at lower end of sending unit and there would be 3 wires instead. FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT Remove fuel gauge sending unit from vehicle. Connect an ohmmeter between sending unit connector terminals. See FUEL GAUGE SENDING UNIT RESISTANCE . If resistance is not as specified, replace sending unit.

Thanks for sending the diagram. Do you have instructions on how to drop the fuel tank?

I am not ble to find any diagrams to show how to drop the fuel tank and would rely only on written instructions. 1 . Keep fuel level low before starting work to reduce the weight of the tank and also avoid spillage. 2 . Release fuel pressure FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE CAUTION: DO NOT perform this procedure when the engine is hot. Doing so may have an adverse effect on the catalytic convertor. a . Place transmission in Neutral (M/T) or Park (A/T). Set parking brake and block drive wheels. Disconnect fuel pump relay from relay box. Relay box is located between battery and shock tower.

b . Remove fuel filler cap to release fuel vapor pressure in fuel tank. c . Reinstall fuel filler cap. Start engine and run until engine dies. After engine dies, crank engine 2 -3 times for about 3 seconds to dissipate fuel pressure in lines. To restore normal operation, reconnect fuel pump relay connector. 3 . Raise and support vehicle on stands. 4 . Use floor jack to support fuel tank. 5 . Remove fuel tank holding bolts. 6 . Lower fuel tank slightly and disconnect fuel, inlet and vacumn hoses. 7 . Disconnect wire couplers. 8 . Lower fuel tank 9 . Remove the fuel sending unit by removing the holding screws/nuts.
