2002 Subaru Outback Why disc & drums on rear brakes

This is the first I have heard of this. Why both. . .is it more is better? I was used to front disc and rear drums in previous vehicles. When I went to an auto parts store to get what I needed to service front & rear brakes they told me that all 4 were disc and never said anything about the rear shoes. I didn't realize until it all was taken apart and I am stuck with no shoes. Is it OK to change everything else out & wait until next tiem for the shoes? Please advise.

? Should only be equipped with front and rear disc brakes. Do not have drums or shoes. All four are disc and pads. You certain you are looking at shoes?

As sure as I can be. When we pulled off the rotor there were shoes on the inside with all the usual hardware. When I looked up the parts for a 2002 Subaru Outback it lists rear disc and drums.

I guess I will give the dealer a call tomorrow.

subaru has both drums and discs in the back, the drums brakes are for the emergency brake and the disc are for the regular stopping. On my 1999 I have two sets of shoes. one for e brake and one for regular driving.
