Transmission problem
1999 Subaru Outback 4 cylinder All Wheel Drive Automatic 97,500 miles

My 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback has begun leaking transmission fluid at an alarming rate. I have been trying to determine from which section of the transmission the leak is coming from but have not been able to identify a point source. I recently went on a long road trip and worried about loosing fluid while driving, but it seems that most of the fluid loss is while it is sitting or when the transmission is first engaged after having sat overnight. I read somewhere that these transmissions have had trouble with the forward clutch package going out, but I am hoping that it is something less serious. Thanks for your help!

Hi:
The forward clutch pack is a set of clutches in the transmission. That would not cause a leak. check the pan for a bad gasket, and check cooling lines to the radiator.

Let me know what you find.
