1999 Subaru Outback Transmission

I was driving my 1999 subaru outback legacy this morning and it just started reviving high without pulling. I shifted the automatic gear to 1 from drive and it will do only up to 51Km/hr. I was able to drive it like that but any time you try to accelerate the engine just roar and the car will not go any faster. When I park the car and shift the tranny into the park position, the car rolls back ward because it was on a hill. My mechanic thinks it is the transmission that is dead. Can any one help me before going to spend that money in changing the tranny? It is a wagon

Even if the transmission is "toasted", when you put it in park it shouldn't roll. I would have someone check the shifting linkage.

The linkage was checked and it is fine. It shift into all gears but when you step on the accelerator the rpm rises to about 6000 or more but nothing happens. Will it be that something is broken in the transmission? Could anyone help or ever experience this calamity before?

If the shift lever is moving on the trans, and it still won't move, the problem is internal. It could be the torque converter, internal linkage, pressure regulator, any number of things. You're probably going to have to take it in to a shop and have it checked out.

James, I took it to the shop and the mechanic said even when the shift is in the parked position, something keep turning in the tranny. He thinks something is broken in the tranny and suggested it is not worth fixing due to the age of the car. Do you have any suggestions? Unfortunately, it is a bad time spending money on a new car due to the recession. I will appreciate any suggetions that car put that car on the road again at least for now until I can afford a new one.

Apparently, the mechanic didn't pull the trans pan and take a "physical" look. The problem with the "park dog" should be visible with the trans pan removed. Also, there should be "something" laying in the pan that will tell us what happened.
Otherwise, if you're content with using the parking brake, I wouldn't worry about it.
