1996 Subaru Outback cv joint

Hi there,

I am sure that these shafts have a roll pin that need to be knocked out. check carefully around the inner joint is is about 1/4 "dia earlier Subaru's have this locking pin.

I have tried the punch and I I do not think there is any thing in there, is there another approach? Am I missing something? If the punch is just sliding through the hole and the next size is to big, or how hard would it be to knock this pin out? Here is a pic with the punch in it, also the muffler looks like the bolts are wielded on and I can not get them off, any suggestions?

For the drive shaft just check that it is not a roll pin fitted, if so an exact size punch will be required, This is the only locking device in the shaft so if no pin fitted the shaft will move. The exhaust nut is welded and you will have to undo the bolt end.

Can I move the transmission to get to the clutch with out taking the cv shifts out? If the roll pins are still in the cv, I can not find them. If it is a specialty tool, I have no idea what tool or where to find it. So can I move the transmission back to get to the clutch without taking the two cv out? And thank you for all the help!

I just don't understand how the shafts are so tight , with no roll pin in the shafts should be very loose.. So as for dropping the trans, i have only ever lifted the engine to access the clutch. I don't think that you will get enough clearance with the shafts still in place.
