timing belt

I have a 1995 Subaru....with 162,000 miles
the timing belt was changed at 90,000 right before I bought the car.
Now it is time to change the timing belt again they tell me. I have gotten all kinds of price quotes from 400 to 800 dollars?????? :?
What is the real cost of this project....I realized they may have to replace the water pump while they are in there.
they also tell me "other" belts may have to be replaced...how come I feel like I am being taken for a ride???? :shock:

A large part of the cost is the belt itself. I was going to do mine myself when I got the same quote and found out that the belt is about $150 to buy alone, and it's only available from the dealership. They may also be quoting the idlers as well which is recommended. As far as the other belts, they would be the accessory belts which have to come off anyway, so don't let them charge you more labor for that.

I'm doing the same project on a 1995 2.2L Outback. I got the belt from O'Rielly's auto parts for $55.00 plus tax.

MUCH easier to replace before it breaks,
the timing will be correct already turn engine till marks all line up before removing old belt then install new belt WITHOUT MOVING engine.
Reassemble
