Oil Pan Replacement

1993 Subaru Legacy, 244,000 miles. I need to replace the oil pan on this vehicle and I have already purchased the new pan. However, when I got under the vehicle, I found that the four rear bolts for the pan are hidden from view. They appear to be inaccessible. What is the normal procedure for doing this job ? Do I have to pull the engine out ?

Hmmm...sounds like a subaru - making you go the extra step to repair. Let me take a look at my 91 Loyale (similar to Legacy) and get back to you later. Keep that Ru Running! 244K!

Ok. Not an easy task if you don't have the right tools.
1. Drain the oil
2. remove the nuts from the engine mount at the chassis then raise the engine 2 inches with an engine lift
3. remove bolts securing oil pan to engine - over 10 bolts
4. Tap the pan and it should come loose - you can use a putty knife to break the gasket seal.
5. Pan will only drop so far before there is interference with oil pump pickup tube. Unbolt tube from block and remove oil pan.

With all that said; if you don't want to tackle the problem, take it to a mechanic and at least you won't be charged for an oil pan.
