I have a 2001 Outback sedan (4cyl, auto) with 103K on it. I just had the drive and timing belts replaced according to Subaru's recommendation. Now my power steering pump makes a fair amount of noise when I'm driving, which I have never experienced before. In fact others noticed it right away too. I've had a pump go out in another car and the noise sounds the same.

Could this somehow be a result of having the belts replaced? It seems too coincidental to me.

note: with the timing belt I did have the tensioners, water pump, and thermostat replaced as well

Well found the problem...

The mech didn't purge the system after he reattached the lines to the pump. So there was a fair amount of air present in the system. Had some nice frothy power steering fluid.
