Clutch problem

I have a 2002 Subaru WRX (2.0 turbo) with 65000 miles on it. It seems that my clutch is slipping/failing. The two symptoms I have are this: 1. It is harder to get it into 1st gear and the clutch engages later than it used to. 2. Twice now I have been going at freeway speeds and the engine will rev up about 2000 rpm with no effect on my speed and then settle back into normal driving. Is this my clutch or a problem with a cylinder? Also, what parts have to be removed to get at the clutch (I may want to upgrade these parts while they are off of the car)? Thanks.

Hi there,

Yes, it sounds like you clutch is on it's last legs. To do these clutches it is the motor that is removed, Normal practice is to replace the clutch plate, pressure plate, thrust bearing & spigot bearing if fitted. Also the fly wheel should be machined as well. As far as anything else, it is just a case of a close inspection around the engine bay looking for hoses or belts that may be due for replacement while the motor is out. Common scence is the key word, get a second opinion if the mechanic tries to sell you something that your not sure about.
