My son's 1991 Subaru Loyale 4wd wagon has 124,000 miles and has never had the timing belt changed. He is a poor college student and can't afford to get it replaced right now. If the timing belt breaks on that model, will it ruin the engine as what happened with his Honda Accord a few years ago?
I was told that there was a notation on the "timing cover" that will indicate whether or not the breaking of the timing belt will interfer with operation of the engine, but we don't know where that is.

I think the factory says to replace the timing belts every 30,000 to 40,000 miles. If the belt's breaks it will not hurt the motor in that car. But why not replace them before they break and leave him on the side of the road in the middle of the night and then you have to pay a tow bill on top of the repair bill too!!
There are two belts on this car you need to replace the water pump while you are doing the belts too. It is right there and will not cost that much more labor while the belts are being changed out.
