Transmission problem
1991 Subaru Loyale 4 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic

I depress the brake pedal, release hand brake, press gearshift release button from Park.....but cannot shift out of Park. (fwd mode) I also tried same procedure in 4wd mode. Won't budge. I also noticed, that when I depress the brake pedal, I no longer hear a sound that is usually made when I am about to shift out of Park.

In desperation, I have been using the over-ride release button.

I am the original owner and vehicle milage is 125,000

Hi kaybee1950,

Thank you for the donation.

The interlock system is malfunctioning and not allowing you to shift out of park. You could be driving without brake lights all these while.

Check if the brake lights are working, if not, check the fuses and brake switch.

Thank you for your reply. Brake Lights work fine. We tested that the 1st time trouble occured.

Back in April 2009, I had taken my vehicle to Subaru Dealership. It didn't happen all the time, but I brought it to there attention. Listed on that invoice they indicated R&R Center Console and Lubed Shift Solenoid..That lasted for 1 mo. I also had a EGR Solenoid Valve replaced and Cleared Memory Dealership was sold (Burt Subaru) and my warrently became worthless.

Any suggestions?

Sorry for the delay in replying. Seems the notification did not get through to me.

As previous work on lubricating the interlock shift solenoid works, I would sugggest checking that item again. Most probably it is not working correctly and might need replacement.
