Electrical problem
2005 Subaru Legacy 4 cyl All Wheel Drive Automatic

Just purchased pre-owned this Subaru Legacy Station Wgn. Have had it less than a month. Before I take it back to the Dealers I'd like to have some information.
My back up lights apprear not to be working - I have checked in the manual & changed both fues in the passenger fuse compartment & the engine compartment. Have also confirmed that the bulbs are fine.
What else should I be looking for?

Which model legacy do you have?Also what engine size?Turbo or non turbo?Let me know so i can help you out.

In the left side inside fuse box you should have power to both side's of fuse number 18.Do you have a 5 speed or a 4 speed automatic transmission?Let me know.

It is an automatic w/ SPORT mode.
I changed both fuses in the passenger compartment - Fuse panel # 18 / Fuse rating 10 & in the Engine compartment - Fuse panel # 8 / Fuse rating # 20, with no luck. Again I also check both bulbs & theny looked fine

Go to your back bulbs with the key in the run position engine off car in reverse ebrake on.See if you have power to the brown and yellow wire's to back up bulb's.Now see if you have a good ground to the black wire to the bulb's.

Would you not need testers, whatever to do all that? I am a female - & have none of that. Any other options? I just changed the bulbs today and still no luck.

What next?

And/or what could be the worst case scenario? and cost? or

Yes you will need a multimeter to test what i asked you to test no way around it to figure this problem out.The next thing you would have to do is get a multimeter and start learning how to test what i just asked you to test.It could be anything simple like a bad ground to the bulb's or a bad INHIBITOR SWITCH which sends power to the bulb's when the car is in reverse.Without testing we won't have any clue why your back up bulb's.Do you have a friend that could help you do some testing?Maybe they have a multimeter?

No...the only one that may have something like that is my mechanic. I'll check with him - cut - I was hoping not to have to pay $75/hr for labour just yet to check that out.

Unless you want to get one and learn how to use it there is no other choice in your case.
