Transmission problem
2002 Subaru Impreza 6 cyl Manual WRX miles

My wife hit an 8-foot metal bar that fell off the back of a truck on the highway. It struck and burst the left front tire, then shot beneath the wagon and struck the rear axle so that it bent a cross-tie. At impact, the manual car decelerated from approx. 60 mph to 10 mph without any compensating downshift from 5th gear. After the tire was replaced and an alignment was done, the car's transmission made loud, growling noises and the car shook at speeds above 40 mph. Examination of transmission showed two highly worn bearings but no other gear meshing, metal or damage to the transmission. Is the transmission behavior unrelated to the collision or was the sudden gear-down the cause of the wear? The car has approx. 70,000 miles. The only wear was in 4th and 5th gear bearings. Coincidental condition or cause-and-effect? Thanks for your swift reply.

I would say it would be a part of the collision issue. Especially if it were no problem before hand, and how fast the speed has changed.
