My car just died the other day and after bringing it to shop they said timing belt slipped and adjusted and replaced tensioner. Now when they attempt to start the car you hear this loud knocking noise every second. The mechanic said I need a new long engine block as something inside mine is damaged. What are my options here? Can I avoid dropping 3k on a new long block? Should I get second opinion? any help/suggestions are appreciated.

Take it to the dealer. Apparently this shop has no idea how to work on Subaru's in the first place.
