1997 Subaru Impreza speedometer not working

my speedometer and odometer has stopped working. i've been told it could be a sensor or the cluster or a cable. i don't want to have to spend $300 just to find out what the problem is. can you advise me.

mike[/quote:c26970686b] The speedo cable goes into a small adapter on the top of the trans on the passenger side (you can see it from under the hood). If you un screw the adapter you will find a small tab is broken off because the adapter is seized. Make sure you get the broken part out and sometimes the rubber seal and a washer stick in there also. When you install the new adapter it only need to be hand tight
