1996 Subaru Impreza Only blows hot air

This happened all of a sudden . . .
I live in L.A. and use either the "vent" or "A/C" to get cold air inside my car. I worked late one night last week and it got quite cold, so I turned on the heat for a good 20 minutes. The next day I drove the car and noticed that no matter what selection I was on (vent, A/C, etc.) and no matter what air temp. selection I was on (from as cold to as hot as it gets), I was only getting hot air. I've kept an eye on the engine temp. guage and it's not doing anything different - staying pretty much just below the half-way point. A friend told me that maybe my A/C system died, which seems logical as there's no more cooled air. Can someone verify this, or suggest what else it could be? Also, don't suppose you know what the average cost to fix it might be . . . ?

OK.... It sounds to me that the blend door in the evap. case has, somehow, caused your problem. When you used the heat, the door may have stuck in the HEAT position. Either the actuator has stuck or the door itself. Is the air HOT or just ambient temp? (outside air temp)... Get back with more details and I'll help ya...

Can I access the evap. case easily?

Not really. It's usually a pretty big chore. In most, the dash has to come out and then the evap. case. The A/C will have to be discharged as well. This is probably a job for a professional. Before all that is done, though, you'll need to diagnose the problem further. You'll need to know for sure that it's NOT the actuator. Even that will probably have to be done by a pro... Sounds like you have a tricky situation happening and, unfortunately, there's no EASY way to solve it. I recommend taking it to a shop and let them start diagnosing it for you....
