usually bad outer cv joints will click when turning sharply so thats another way to notice if the bearings have created a hot spot or bind. I have only seen a few scenarios where axles actually cause this issue striaght line shimmy issue but it was certainly the axles.

At this point if your cv boots have been open for some time i would recommend changing out the axles for new ones. Simply repacking them with grease and putting a new boot on usually will not fix them.

I would go over the whole front end and inspect for other issues before suspecting cv joints, but as i said i have seen this happen more then once.
