The ac compressor was smoking and squealing when engaged. I assume it is about to lock up. The vehicle runs fine when the compressor is off. Does this sound like the compressor? If so, how do you change the ac compressor

Sounds like it's on its last leg. Have it replaced. Repair manuals are cheap considering the money you save yourself. I would advise to pick one up.
