My Forester shudders when I make hard right or left turns. Old mechanic shut down -- went to new guy who told me struts were shot. Replaced struts but problem continued. Now tells me that the transmission box that runs the AWD and is inside the transmission is broken -- he found metal shavings in transmission fluid. Told me needs repair for minimum of $3,000 but could be more and that I should not drive it (so have not been comfortable taking somewhere else to get a second opinion.) Considering that he was wrong on struts and charged about $800 to replace them and wants $1,000 up front in cash -- am worried that I am getting ripped off. Is this plausible (I definitely "feel" that something is wrong)? Is the price appropriate? and is it correct that I should not drive at all (and therefore not get second opinion?
