Stuck in drive

I started my vehicle and shifted it into reverse, then into drive. Then the column shifter lost all resistance and it will not go out of drive. It would drive forward, but i needed reverse again. So i turned it off, now it will not turn back on because it is showing it it stuck in drive. Had it towed, this was 11:00 pm. Waiting for shop to open. Any ideas what could be wrong? No indicator lights came on and was driving fine until this happened suddenly.
