This vehicle isn't offered in the US, so my technical information is extremely limited. However, I will try my best to help.
When you say someone played with the gear lever, what did they actually do? Now, since it is a manual, there is linkage between the shifter and transmission. Have you checked the linkage to make sure nothing is bent, disconnected, or damaged in any way?
I found what I believe to be a similar picture to what you should see. The first picture shows the linkage broken at the transmission. The second pic shows the linkage going back toward the shifter in the vehicle. Check these areas and see if anything is damaged. The last pic shows how the linkage attaches to the shifter. There are bushings involved here that may have failed, so make sure to check for that as well.
Again, this may not be exact, but I suspect it is very similar to your vehicle.
